50-State / Multi-Jurisdiction Surveys

What are 50-State and Multi-Jurisdiction Surveys?

50-state or multi-jurisdiction surveys are compilations of statutes, regulations, or other sources of law from multiple jurisdictions on a particular topic. They can be a great place to start when you are trying to find the law from one or several jurisdictions related to a topic in which you are interested. Laws frequently identify a legal issue using different terminology (e.g. covenants not to compete vs. non-compete clauses), which can make locating the law from any given jurisdiction difficult. Finding a relevant 50-state or multi-jurisdiction survey allows you to easily identify the law(s) you need. Note that you should always pay attention to the date that any survey you want to use was created and be sure to actually read the underlying statutes yourself rather than simply relying on the information provided.
